Dispersion and Uniformity of Flame Retardants in Ultra-Thin Adhesive Layers

The trend toward miniaturization in consumer electronics has led to increasingly thinner adhesive layers in ultra-thin materials such as FPCs and FFCs. Traditional flame retardants consist of coarse particles that are difficult to disperse uniformly in thin layers, leading to localized agglomeration and stress concentration. This not only affects the flexibility and bond strength of the adhesive layer but may also compromise electrical insulation performance.


The YS-F22B was designed specifically for this application from the outset. It features a specially engineered ultra-fine particle size distribution—D95 ≤ 10 μm. This ultra-fine particle size makes it particularly suitable for use in adhesives for ultra-thin materials such as flexible printed circuit boards. Additionally, this product is non-hygroscopic and insoluble in water and common organic solvents such as acetone, dichloromethane, methyl ethyl ketone, and toluene; however, it disperses easily in solvents like acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. When using a high-shear mixer, it can be easily dispersed into epoxy resin systems. This characteristic ensures that the flame retardant is uniformly distributed throughout the ultra-thin adhesive layer without compromising the adhesive’s flexibility and electrical properties.


Reliability Degradation in Humid and High-Temperature Environments

Electronic devices are often exposed to harsh environments characterized by high temperatures and high humidity during operation. If conventional flame retardants absorb moisture or undergo hydrolysis, this can lead to a decline in the insulating properties of the resin layer and may even corrode precision circuits. Furthermore, the peak temperature of lead-free soldering processes reaches 260°C, requiring flame retardants to remain stable and non-volatile at high temperatures.


The YS-F22B mitigates these two risks thanks to its outstanding chemical stability. This product is non-hygroscopic, exhibits excellent hydrolytic stability, and has a decomposition temperature exceeding 300°C. It disperses well in solvents such as acetone and butanone, and does not volatilize or migrate. These characteristics enable it to withstand the high-temperature processes of lead-free soldering while maintaining stable electrical insulation performance in high-humidity environments. For applications requiring long-term reliability—such as FPCs, electronic potting compounds, and label adhesives—this ensures that flame retardancy does not diminish due to environmental changes, and that component protection remains consistently effective.


Component Contamination Caused by Flame Retardant Migration

Some flame retardants slowly migrate to the surface after the adhesive cures, not only affecting appearance but also potentially contaminating adjacent electronic components—leading to issues such as contact oxidation, poor contact, and signal distortion. For precision electronic equipment, this “invisible contamination” is often more subtle and difficult to trace than outright performance failure.


YS-F22B cuts off migration pathways through its insoluble and non-volatile chemical nature. It is insoluble in water and common organic solvents and exhibits an extremely low tendency to migrate within the polymer matrix. At the same time, it forms an intumescent char layer during combustion, providing thermal insulation, oxygen isolation, and preventing further flame spread. This mechanism not only ensures the durability of the flame-retardant effect but also fundamentally eliminates the risk of flame retardant leaching and component contamination.
