Those of you working on flame retardancy for PU leather know the drill—
Adding flame retardants is easy; the real challenge is ensuring performance isn’t compromised afterward.
Too much flame retardant makes the leather stiff and reduces its softness, leading to customer returns
Poor dispersion causes surface granulation and white spots, keeping yield rates low
Severe migration during high-temperature processing affects both embossing and lamination
These are all long-standing challenges in flame-retardant modification of PU leather.
Yinsu ADM flame retardant was developed specifically for PU leather.
This intumescent flame retardant is formulated through the synergistic blending of halogen-free phosphorus-nitrogen-based flame retardants, and is specifically designed for soft material systems such as PU synthetic leather and PU-coated materials.
Rather than simply loading the material with flame retardants, it utilizes a synergistic phosphorus-nitrogen mechanism to rapidly expand into char during combustion, forming a dense char layer that insulates against heat, blocks oxygen, and suppresses melt droplets—resulting in high flame retardancy efficiency while actually reducing the required addition level.
The benefits go beyond mere “flame retardancy”:
✅ Addition level: 15%–25%—low dosage, high efficiency, and better control over formulation costs
✅ UL94 V-0—Meets standards in conventional systems without the need for repeated troubleshooting
✅ Soft hand feel and excellent retention of physical properties—The resulting leather is not hard, stiff, or brittle
✅ Superior dispersibility—No white spots or granules, ensuring consistent surface quality
✅ No migration and processing stability—No migration during high-temperature processing; embossing, lamination, and surface treatment remain unaffected
✅ Halogen-free and eco-friendly—Complies with RoHS and REACH, ensuring worry-free export; low smoke and low toxicity during combustion
So what can ADM do? PU automotive interior leather, furniture leather, high-end luggage leather, and protective clothing leather—these applications, which demand both flame retardancy and a soft hand feel, are exactly where it excels.
We’ve been working on flame retardancy for over twenty years.
