The “Have Your Cake and Eat It Too” of Foam Materials: How to Achieve Damping, Flame Retardancy, and Strength All at Once?

Engineers who design vibration-damping materials are all familiar with an “impossible triangle”: to achieve good damping, the material must be somewhat “soft” and have higher energy dissipation; to ensure good flame retardancy, large amounts of flame retardants must often be added, at the cost of reduced mechanical properties; and mechanical strength—which must withstand long-term loads—is in direct conflict with the first two requirements.

Automotive chassis mounts, rail transit sleeper pads, and vibration-damping components for precision equipment—these applications require all three properties. They must absorb vibration and noise, meet fire safety standards, and withstand years of compression fatigue. The traditional approach is to “pack” flame retardants into polyurethane foam, but adding too much compromises mechanical properties, while adding too little fails to meet fire safety standards. With these three criteria pulling in opposite directions, solving one problem inevitably creates another.

A New Approach: Instead of “filling in” flame retardants, let them “grow” naturally.

The YinSu flame-retardant R&D team took one specific approach to address this issue: embedding a phosphorus-based flame-retardant structure directly into the material’s molecular chain. Specifically, they introduced biphenyl phosphate flame-retardant monomers during the reaction stage to participate in the polymerization process, making flame retardancy an “innate” property of the material rather than a “post-added” feature. As a result, the flame-retardant properties originate at the molecular level, preventing the continuous phase structure of the foam from being disrupted by the addition of large amounts of powdered flame retardants, thereby naturally preserving its damping and strength.

But that wasn’t enough. With the core of the foam material addressed, the surface also needed to hold up. Using a sol-gel process, the R&D team constructed a flame-retardant enhancement layer on the surface of the foam that incorporates polysiloxane chains. This is equivalent to dressing the foam in a layer of flexible armor, creating a synergistic effect between the interior and exterior—with the “intrinsic flame retardancy” of the molecular structure providing a foundation internally, and the flame-retardant enhancement layer reinforcing it externally. As a result, the three key performance metrics—damping, flame retardancy, and mechanical strength—all improve simultaneously within the same material.

This technology is being transformed into products.

This technical exploration in the field of high-damping flame retardancy is a natural extension of the iterative development path of Yinsu Flame Retardant  LEFP series of microcellular foam materials (with adjustable densities ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 g/cm³). The LEFP series is currently used in applications such as automotive shims, railroad sleeper pads, solid tires, and footwear materials. Keeping R&D ahead of product development has always been Yinsu Flame Retardant’s guiding principle.

Our confidence in R&D comes from our team.

Yinsu Flame Retardant  R&D team is guided by Professor Hu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, while CEO Dr. Yan personally oversees all product development and technical testing in both the factory and the laboratory. From the continuous upgrading of equipment to the precise control of production, every batch of material must undergo multiple rounds of validation before being released to the market.

Pushing the boundaries of material performance step by step, and transforming the “can’t-have-it-all” scenarios in customers’ operating conditions into “it’s all possible”—this is what Yinsu Flame Retardants is truly dedicated to.

Yinsu flame retardant is a factory, focuses on manufacturing non halogen, low smoke and non-toxic flame retardants for various of applications. It develops different chemical and plastic additive.
